I love the steak. Is there anything better than a good steak to improve your day? For those days I have neither the time nor the energy to clean up, the air fryer steak is the perfect answer.
Steak in an air fryer?
Why make a steak in an air fryer when you have a cast iron steak, seared upside down or flame broiled? While these are all great ways to cook a steak, an air fryer can take your raw steaks to less raw (i.e. perfectly done) in under 10 minutes, with almost no cleaning and everything. this cleaning takes place in a dishwasher. After a long day at work, it sounds a lot better to me than hand rubbing a cast iron skillet or preheating your grill.
How many steaks can you put in an air fryer
It depends heavily on your air fryer, but the optimal answer seems to be 2. In a pinch, with racks (more on this below) you can do 4 or even 6.
How to grasp
Some people claim that an air fryer can’t get a good crust on a steak. I say: look at the photo below. Air frying with its fan and high temperatures reproduces a competent grill. The trick seems to be to get the steak as close to the heating element as possible. For these photos, I used air fryer racks to lift the steaks up to the heating element, and the resulting crust is really good for an effortless weekday steak.
Heck, it’s better than some (admittedly terrible) restaurants that I wished I ordered a steak at.
Air fryer grates
Air fryers are great, but air fryers with grates are a game-changer. The grates allow you to lift steaks closer to the heating elements, cook more steaks at a time, and avoid any weird grill patterns from the air fryer basket. You can use any racks that stack and fit into your air fryer. This is the one I use, but be sure to measure your air fryer and make sure the stand fits inside before you buy it.
Ideally, you want to bring your steak as close to the heating element as possible while still leaving an inch of airspace to make sure nothing spontaneously burns. Do not leave during the 7 minutes that the steaks are cooking just in case.
That said, these are steaks drizzled with butter cooked an inch from a 400 ° F heating element. Things are going to get smoky. I put our air fryer right under our overhead hood fan and it did the trick. If you want a good crust, there’s no real way around the smoke. If you don’t have a range hood fan, you may want to take out your air fryer.
The best cut for steak in the air fryer
This is not a high added value steak recipe. There are better ways to cook expensive steaks. This is more of a weekday evening grocery store steak recipe.
Having said that, I tried this with a more expensive strip loin and a cheaper sirloin, for science. Both were about 1.25 ” thick and both are perfect. The oily cap on the strip loin is rendered enough that it isn’t chewy and unappetizing, which is always a risk when you make the medium strip loin scarce. The sirloin was still tender and juicy and not at all hard or tasteless, which is always a risk with the sirloin.
Preheat your air fryer
Preheating an air fryer seems like an unnecessary step, but it’s really useful for a quick cooking recipe like steak by reducing the time it takes to bring your air fryer to temperature. I tossed some oil-coated garlic cloves into the basket while preheating (and cooking the steak) and they came out roasted and gooey.
Air Fryer Steak Time
For quick and easy reference, the steaks are roughly prepared at:
Rare: 125 ° F
Medium-rare: 135 ° F
Medium: 145 ° F
Average well: 155 ° F
Well done: 🤷♂️
To pre-slice or not
It is a preferential thing. Most classic American steakhouses give you a whole steak and a sharp knife and get you into town, but the fanciest places in the world like to pre-cut your steaks into 1/2 ” strips that are easier to handle. against the grain. You still get a knife and get the slicing experience, but it’s easier to work with. It is also a much prettier presentation.
Which air fryer do you have?
If you are wondering which fryer we have, it is this one. It’s quiet and easy to clean and quite wide, which is great for steaks.
All you need for a great steak is salt, pepper – and in this case – butter, but who ever complained about having a great steak sauce? Check out this article for our best steak sauces such as classic pepper, mustard cream, garlic mushroom, coconut curry or Japanese chimichurri.
And of course you need potatoes!
