Turtles»Are chocolate pecan caramel candies. Pecans tend to protrude from the sides of the candies, making them look like turtle paws. This is how turtles get their name. Chocolate, caramel and pecan desserts are often referred to as “turtle” (like my chocolate turtle cookies). That’s why they’re called Turtle Brownies!

How to make turtle brownies:

The first thing to do is line a square pan with parchment paper. This will make it infinitely easier to remove the turtle brownies from the pan. Cut two pieces of parchment and cross them so that they fit over the pan and come up to the sides.

For the dough, melt the butter with the sugar in a saucepan, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Then pour it into a bowl and let it cool slightly. Stir in the vanilla, salt and eggs. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and mix. Then add the chopped caramels, chocolate chips and pecans. This is the dough and it is poured into the prepared pan. Additional chocolate chips and pecans are sprinkled on top. The brownies are baked for about 25 minutes.

It is best to let turtle brownies cool completely before cutting them. Once cool, use the parchment paper to help lift the slice of brownies out of the pan and move them onto a cutting board. Drizzle with caramel syrup before serving.

The turtle brownies are full of all that is awesome. They’re melting for sure, and there’s a lot of chocolate because of the added chocolate chips. There is caramel inside and outside of the brownies. And the pecans are crisp.

How to store turtle brownies:

It is best to store turtle brownies in a single layer in a sealed container. If you have to stack them, just use a piece of waxed paper between layers to avoid sticking. They will be good at room temperature for about 3 days. Store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

As a serving suggestion, lightly heat a brownie in the microwave to warm it up a bit. Garnish with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and (plus) caramel syrup. Salted caramel sauce is an even better idea. Yum. Enjoy!
