The best way to describe this delicious alternative coleslaw recipe is that it is a crunchy and sweet salad with a slightly sweet and creamy dressing. A lot of chopped apples are combined with shredded cabbage. In fact, there are more apples than cabbage in this salad!

The ingredients for the dressing include sour cream, lemon juice, sugar, salt, pepper, and poppy seeds. It’s such an easy salad to make and it’s perfect for a weekend barbecue. I love the touch of color that the red apples also give to the salad!

What kind of apples would work well in this apple coleslaw recipe?

The recipe calls for delicious red apples. These are the types of apples that would work best in this recipe. If you don’t have Red Delicious apples on hand, there are equally good substitutions. Honeycrisp, Gala, and Fuji apples would also be used well in this salad.

I have been making this salad (coleslaw) for many years. It’s the one I brought to potlucks and parties, and it’s also the one I served at barbecues. Everyone seems to love having coleslaw as a choice on a buffet table. This strain is still a big hit. The crunch and sweetness of the apples is so good!

Suggested additions to this apple coleslaw:

This coleslaw is great on its own, but if you’re interested in turning things up… try adding in chunks of drained pineapple and chopped walnuts.

Is this coleslaw a recipe made in advance?

Yes! I believe this coleslaw will taste better if it is made in the morning and enjoyed later in the day. Leftovers can be enjoyed the next day. I wouldn’t suggest doing it a day in advance. It’s hard to say how well apples will keep in salad overnight. They should be fine, but it’s not certain.
